There has been a lot of talk about my impending retirement, and frustration with lack of access to the thoughts, messages and answers I deliver. So, I decided to give "Blogging" a try. Until I retire, the standard blog will consist of a brief version of my weekly sermon. After my retirement, the blog will take the place of that message.
I am also interesting in continuing to answering the many good questions you pose to me. So there will be a way to send me those and check back for answers (Yes, yes, names can be changed to protect the innocent...).
Hopefully this can become a good outlet for wisdom sharing and continued walking together on our journey.

Why "Shepnerd"?
Shepnerd is a nickname given to me by my church when I was pastoring in El Paso. My favorite ministry imagery is that of the Shepherd tending God's flock. I am also a huge nerd who likes Star Wars, Star Trek, Comics and Computers. So instead of Shepherd, they decided to call me Shepnerd. Somehow it just stuck.

Why do we call it "Good Friday" when its the day we remember the dark and painful death of Jesus on the cross?
The actual explanation is two fold - only in the English Speaking west do we call it "good" friday - In European cultures it's "Holy Friday" or in Nordic cultures its "Mourning Friday". So why do English cultures call it "good" -- because in English (the England kind) "Good" became another way of saying "God" - such as is "Good-bye" which was another way of saying "God be with you" or "Good Day to You" (God's Day to You). So it was for a period of time "God's Friday" - a day Holy and set apart by God for this event.

What"s The Lectionary
Dear Shepnerd, you always mention the "lectionary". What is that and why do you refer to it?
I follow the Revised Common Lectionary for sermons and writings most of the time. The lectionary is a list of scriptures generated for a 3 year cycle (year A, B, C) to take Christians throughout the bible in a way that follows the liturgical seasons. Each Sunday has a Psalm, an Old Testament Reading, A New Testiment Reading, and a Gospel Reading.
I use it because it creates discipline and allows God to speak a full message through me. I am not just picking my favorite or easy scriptures, and I am not just giving the word on one or two favorite topics. Many pastors use the lectionary to be sure to challenge themselves in order to share the whole word of God for the whole people of God.

Question: Is there any significance that in some places the Bible uses "disciples" and in other places "apostles"? Answer: Disciples and Apostles are different words. Disciple comes from the Latin "discipulus", pupil, from the root word "discere", to learn - that word got into the bible when it was translated from Greek into Latin. Some of the words used to describe Jesus' followers didn't translate specifically into a latin word - so the translators used the word "disciples" whenever that happened. Apostle comes from the greek word "Apostolos" - which means "sent from" - so when the followers of Jesus were described as the "apostolos" (the ones sent from Jesus into the world) it was translated as Apostle. (That's why Paul is not a Disciple - he wasn't Jesus' student - but he is an Apostle because he was sent from Jesus).
Batman"s Church?
Question: If batman was a Christian, what church would he attend? Answer: That's hard to say - He could never be charismatic because all that hugging and hand raising would drive him crazy, and he wouldn't have much patience for denomination meetings, pot-luck dinners or church work days (although I guess he could send Alfred- who is definitely anglican) so that rules out Disciples of Christ, Methodists and Lutherans. My guess would be he'd be Catholic - he keeps a chaotic schedule so he could go to mass whenever, he likes pagentry and beauty and has tons of guilt. He could also go to confession which is more private than "community prayer requests", and if he went to a gothic cathedral would match the decor.
